Welcome!

The year is 2032, and Prince Washington Institute has announced it’s launch of a groundbreaking yet controversial campus-wide 'raceless' social experiment. Seeking a sense of belonging, Astrophysics major Destiny Maria Jones discovers the Black Student Union, which is on the brink of extinction. Energized by the group's resilience and resistance, Destiny joins the fight to navigate and challenge the institution's experiment. Drawing connections between her studies and activism, Destiny redefines her relationship to herself, PWI, and her place in the universe.

Our
Story

Discovering Blackness was first written as a one-act in 2019 while Sunflower was a senior at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In the same year, the play was considered as a semi-finalist for the Eugene O'Neil Playwrights Conference. It was then given a zoom reading in 2020 during through the Coffee and a Play Reading Series, followed by another Zoom Production at The Ritz Theatre in 2021. In 2025, in collaboration with The Media Theatre in Media, PA, Discovering Blackness was staged for it's first in-person live reading. We are excited to continue broadening our audience and interest by bringing Discovering Blackness to Maryland and the DMV area!

MEET THE CAST

"What is Blackness?"

Art Auction

As part of the staged reading of Discovering Blackness, we are curating a visual art showcase titled “What is Blackness?”  This exhibit will explore, honor, and reimagine the vast landscape of Black identity through the eyes of Black artists.

In the show, Blackness is reflected in everything from breaking combs to falling into a black hole. In this show, blackness is on the brink of extinction at PWI, and we want to showcase what’s really at stake, while also creating a way for Black Futures to thrive! 20% of online Auction sales will go towards the Friends of Bowie State Scholarship Fund to support in-need students' journey towards higher education.
